Chiang Mai Zoo Aquarium is operated by Chiang Mai Zoo and Marinescape (Thailand) Co., Ltd. It is the first multiplex aquarium in Asia which contains aquatic environments through marine ecosystems, covering the water sources, as well as the ocean. These are spectacularly exhibited at Chiang Mai Zoo.

Chiang Mai residents’ dream of having the sea at in their hometown has finally come true. “Chiang Mai Zoo Aquarium� is opening its door on October 25 for thousands of sea and fresh water fishes to swim in its Southeast Asia’s largest aquarium and fly over the world’s longest acrylic tunnel.
Chiang Mai is one of the most popular destinations, but the “underwater world� will make the tourist city that combines nature and culture even more perfect. The kings of the water world will meet in the Chiang Mai Zoo Aquarium including the “shark�, king of the ocean; fresh water kings - “giant Mekong catfish� and “giant Chao Phya catfish�; and “Nemo�, the king of the children’s world. Created by Chiang Mai Zoo and MarineScape (Thailand) Co Ltd, the new aquarium on more than 10-rai plot aims to attract more tourists to the city. The aquarium displays more than 8,000 fishes from 250 salt and fresh water species in two compartments, each of which is 66.5 meters. The 13,895-square-meter aquarium features 133-meter acrylic walk-through tunnel and an exhibition on Chiang Mai ecology from the water source in Doi Intanon through rivers, valleys and mangrove forest to the sea. It also boasts an extraordinary showcase of a huge variety of fishes from Chao Phya, Mekong and Amazon rivers. The fresh water display is modeled on the marine environment of the Mekong River.
Director Thanapat Pongamorn of Chiang Mai Zoo says the Chiang Mai Zoo Aquarium will definitely be a new magnet, not only attracting tourists to see the underwater world, particularly those who can’t swim, but also to help raise environmental awareness to everyone.
Set to be the educational center of the marine life, the new aquarium of 4.5-meter deep promises rare species and the most informative exhibitions on marine and mangrove forest environments. Above the giant fish tank features exhibition rooms, showcasing permanent exhibitions on local ecology, mangrove forest and Mekong River. Another highlight is an exhibition on Mekong River that ties people of seven countries; China, Tibet, Laos, Burma, Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand together.
“The aquarium brings an astonishing world of underwater to everyone. It’s also the first time visitors can enjoy the sea and fresh water worlds at once. There will be world’s largest “giant Mekong catfish�, “shark� from the sea, and the crowd of colorful “Nemo� or anemone fish that all the kids will enjoy.�
